RTK vs LiDAR and Vision: How Robot Mowers Navigate

Positioning and perception are two different jobs. Knowing which is which makes the spec sheets readable.

Marketing pages mix these terms together, but they answer different questions. RTK tells the mower where it is. LiDAR and cameras tell it what is in front of it.

Most current wire-free mowers use RTK for position and add a camera, and sometimes laser sensing, for perception. Understanding the split makes it obvious which model suits your garden.

RTK: knowing where you are

RTK pairs the mower's satellite receiver with a fixed reference antenna a short distance away. Because both see the same satellite errors, comparing them cancels most of the error and leaves centimetre-level positioning.

This is what makes virtual boundaries and straight-line mowing possible. It is also why the system stops being accurate when the sky view is blocked.

Cameras: seeing what is there

Camera systems classify what is ahead — a ball, a hose, an animal — and steer around it. On some mowers the camera also supports positioning where satellite coverage weakens, by tracking visual landmarks.

Cameras depend on light and a clean lens. Dusk mowing and muddy conditions reduce their effectiveness, and they need occasional wiping.

LiDAR and laser sensing

Laser-based sensing measures distance directly and works in the dark, which makes it strong at detecting shape and proximity. It is less good at telling you what an object is.

In garden robots, laser sensing usually appears alongside cameras rather than instead of them, because the two are complementary: one measures, the other identifies.

Which combination suits which garden

An open lawn with nothing left on it needs positioning only, and a plain RTK model such as the Segway Navimow i110N is enough.
