A robot mower is a small battery vehicle with three jobs: stay inside the lawn, cut a little grass, and get back to its dock before the battery runs out. Everything else is refinement of those three.

Staying inside the lawn
Wired mowers detect a weak magnetic field from a perimeter cable carrying a low-voltage signal. Crossing it triggers a turn, which is why the system is unaffected by weather or shade.
Wire-free mowers hold a satellite position accurate to a few centimetres and compare it against a boundary drawn in an app. No physical marker exists on the ground at all.
How the cutting system works
Instead of a single large blade, most robot mowers spin a disc carrying small pivoting razor blades. They take a few millimetres off the tip of each blade of grass and mulch the clippings back into the turf.
This is why frequent mowing matters: the system is designed to maintain a length, not to reduce one.
Batteries and docking
The mower works until the battery falls below a threshold, then navigates back to the dock, charges, and either resumes or waits for the next scheduled session.
On large lawns this cycle repeats several times a day, which is why manufacturers quote daily capacity rather than a single run time.
Sensors and safety
Bump, lift and tilt sensors stop the blades within a fraction of a second when the mower is picked up or tipped. Rain sensors delay mowing in wet conditions.
Camera and laser sensing, where fitted, add the ability to steer around an obstacle before touching it.
What the app controls
Schedules, cutting height on some models, zones and no-go areas, firmware updates, and alerts for stuck, lifted or out-of-bounds events all live in the manufacturer's app.
On wire-free models the app is also where the lawn map is created and edited, which makes it a core part of the product rather than an accessory.
