Portable power stations are sold on a wall of numbers, most of which do not affect your decision. This guide covers the six that do, in the order they should be considered.

1. Watt-hours: how long it runs
Watt-hours (Wh) are the fuel tank. Divide watt-hours by the wattage of your load for a rough runtime in hours, then subtract 10–15% for conversion losses through the AC inverter.
A 1024Wh unit running a 100W load gives you roughly eight to nine usable hours. The same unit running a 1000W appliance gives you under an hour.
2. Watts: what it can run at all
Continuous watts is the inverter's sustained ceiling. If an appliance's rating exceeds it, the station will refuse the load or shut down, no matter how much capacity remains.
Surge or lifting ratings cover the brief spike when motors and compressors start. Modes such as X-Boost and Power Lifting extend compatibility for resistive loads only — heaters and kettles, not fridges or electronics.
3. Chemistry: LiFePO4 or nothing
LiFePO4 cells are rated for thousands of charge cycles rather than hundreds, tolerate heat better and cope with partial charging. Every unit we recommend uses them.
The cost is weight. A LiFePO4 unit is heavier than an older lithium-ion unit of the same capacity, and that is the trade worth making for anything you plan to keep.
4. Recharge speed and solar input
How fast a unit refills decides how useful it is across consecutive days or a rolling outage. Current-generation units recharge dramatically faster than the models they replaced.
Solar input ceilings vary widely. Check the maximum input wattage and voltage window before buying panels, and remember that real-world solar rarely reaches the rated figure.
5. Switchover, if this is for outages
EPS and UPS-style switchover means equipment plugged into the station keeps running when grid power drops. It protects what is physically connected — not the house.
For circuit-level backup, including 240V loads, you need a 240V-capable unit and a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician.
6. Expandability and weight
Expandable platforms let you add capacity later. That is valuable for backup and irrelevant for camping, where weight is the only spec that consistently changes behaviour.
Decide first whether the unit will travel or stay. Almost every other choice follows from that answer.
