Almost every robot vacuum sold today claims to mop. The difference between them is whether the machine wipes a floor or actually cleans it, and that comes down to three things: how the pad is held against the floor, how the water is metered, and what happens to the dirty pad afterwards.

The three mopping systems, and what each one can do

A drag pad is a damp cloth clipped under the robot. It picks up light dust film and nothing else, because there is no downward pressure and no motion beyond the robot's own travel. Combos in this group are best thought of as vacuums that leave the floor slightly damper.

Spinning pads rotate under load, so the pad keeps moving even when the robot pauses. This is the first system that removes dried spills rather than spreading them. Roborock, Dreame, Ecovacs and Roborock's Qrevo line all use variations of it, and several extend a pad sideways to reach closer to the wall.

Roller mops, such as the system on the eufy E25, run a rotating roller that is rinsed continuously while it works, so the water touching your floor is cleaner at the end of a run than at the start. That is the practical weakness of every flat pad: it gets dirtier as it goes.

What happens when a combo reaches carpet

This is the question that decides whether a combo suits your home. Some models lift the pad by a stated height — 10mm on the Roborock Qrevo S5V, 10.5mm on the Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 — which is enough for low pile and flat rugs but not for a deep shag. Others avoid carpet entirely while mopping, which is the approach iRobot takes on the Roomba 105 Combo.

If your home is mostly hard floor with a few thin rugs, pad lift is enough. If you have thick pile in the same open space you want mopped, plan on either closing off rooms in the app or removing the pad before mop runs.

Water control and the drying question

More water is not better. Hardwood, laminate and unsealed stone all prefer a damp pass rather than a wet one, so the useful feature is adjustable flow rather than a large tank. Most app-based models offer at least three levels.

Drying matters just as much at the dock. A pad left damp in a closed base develops a smell within days. Docks that wash and then blow-dry the pad — the systems on the Roborock Saros 10R, Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 and eufy E25 — remove the single most common maintenance complaint in owner feedback about combos.

Ongoing maintenance you are signing up for

Every combo adds chores a vacuum-only robot does not have: refilling clean water, emptying dirty water, and replacing pads or rollers on the manufacturer's schedule. An all-in-one dock moves the water chores to roughly weekly instead of per-run, but it does not remove them.

Check the parts list for the model you are considering before buying. Pads, rollers, filters and brushes are consumables, and their prices differ noticeably between brands.

Navigation and mapping

The single biggest quality-of-life difference between robot vacuums is navigation. LiDAR-based systems (Roborock, Dreame, Ecovacs premium tiers) build a precise map on the first run, clean in efficient rows, and let you set no-go zones room by room in the app. Camera-and-gyro systems (iRobot's higher tiers, Shark AI) work well in most homes but occasionally struggle in low light.

Random-bounce navigation still exists at the entry level and it is exactly as inefficient as it sounds — fine for a studio, frustrating in a 3-bedroom home.

Suction and brush design

Suction is quoted in Pascals (Pa), and current models range from figures that are not published at all up to ratings above 20,000Pa. Treat these numbers with care: brands measure suction in different ways, so a higher rating does not automatically mean better cleaning. Brush design, edge coverage and carpet boost matter at least as much.

Brush design matters just as much. Dual rubber roller brushes (iRobot, Roborock premium) resist hair tangles far better than traditional bristle brushes. If you have long-haired pets, this feature alone is worth the upgrade.
