Fine dust is the real hardwood problem

On carpet, debris sinks below the surface. On hardwood it sits on top, drifts with air movement and settles again after the robot has passed. That is why a hardwood home usually needs more frequent short runs rather than more suction.

Sealed filtration matters here for the same reason. A bagless bin emptied indoors puts a portion of that fine dust straight back into the room, where it lands on the floor you just cleaned. A dock that seals the dust into a bag keeps it out of the air.

Plank seams and the gaps at the edge of engineered boards trap grit that a pass down the middle of the room never reaches. Cross-hatch or repeat-pass cleaning modes are more useful on wood than on carpet for this reason.

Roller design, wheels and scratch risk

Rubber and silicone rollers are the safer choice on a finished wood floor. Stiff bristle brushes are more likely to flick trapped grit across the surface, and it is the grit — not the brush — that leaves the fine swirl marks people notice on satin finishes.

The wheels matter as much as the brush. Every mainstream model runs soft rubber treads that are safe on sealed wood, but a wheel that has picked up a piece of grit can drag it. Wiping the wheels and the caster when you clean the brush is a two-minute habit that protects the finish.

The most common cause of marked hardwood is not the robot at all: it is a mop pad that has been used for weeks without washing. A loaded pad is effectively an abrasive. Docks that wash and dry the pad after every run remove that risk almost entirely.

Edge cleaning and baseboards

Round robots cannot physically reach into a 90-degree corner. On hardwood this shows quickly, because a line of dust along a white baseboard is far more visible than the same dust on carpet.

Water control: damp, never wet

Sealed hardwood tolerates damp mopping. It does not tolerate standing water sitting in a seam while the robot finishes the room. The feature to look for is adjustable water flow with a low setting, and a pad that is wetted continuously rather than soaked at the start of the run.

Roller-style mops such as the eufy E25 rinse and scrape the roller as they go, so the water reaching the floor stays fairly clean and the film left behind is thin. Spinning pads apply more pressure, which is better for dried-on marks but needs the low water setting on older or waxed boards.

Unfinished, waxed, oiled or unsealed wood should not be robot-mopped at all. Use vacuum-only mode on those floors and keep mopping manual — this is one place where the manufacturer guidance is unusually consistent.

Moving between hardwood and rugs

Most hardwood homes are not entirely hardwood. Area rugs and runners sit in exactly the paths the robot uses most, and a mop pad dragged onto a wool rug is a genuine problem.

Mop lift is the feature that solves it. Models that raise the pad clear of the floor when carpet is detected can vacuum a rug and mop the wood around it in a single run. The lift height is worth checking: a few millimetres is enough for a flat runner, more is needed for a thick rug.

Where lift height is marginal, use the app to mark rugs as no-mop zones. That keeps the single-run convenience without gambling on the sensor.

Navigation and mapping

The single biggest quality-of-life difference between robot vacuums is navigation.
