Every robot vacuum will do something frustrating at some point. Almost all of it is fixable in a few minutes with basic maintenance. Here are the 10 problems we get asked about most, with the practical fix for each.

1. Getting stuck under furniture or on rugs

The fix: use the app to set no-go zones around problem furniture, and add rug tape to curling rug edges. Rearranging cables and floor clutter also helps significantly.

2. Weak suction over time

The cause is almost always a clogged filter or a hair-wrapped brush. Wash the filter, cut hair off the brushroll and side brush, and empty the bin. Suction usually returns to new.

3. Robot won't return to the dock

Check the dock's charging contacts (wipe with a dry cloth), make sure nothing reflective is in the robot's line of sight to the dock's infrared beacon, and clear a 1.5m radius around the dock.

4. Streaky mopping

Rinse the pads (or run the dock's wash cycle), refill the clean-water tank, and check the water valve isn't blocked. If streaks persist, replace the pads — they compress and lose effectiveness after 3-6 months.

5. Wi-Fi disconnections

Most robots connect on 2.4 GHz only. Confirm your router isn't forcing 5 GHz on that network. Move the dock to a location with a stronger signal, or add a mesh point nearby.

6. Robot loses its map

Usually caused by a firmware update or a big furniture change. Run a fresh map with no doors closed, then re-enter your no-go zones.

7. Suddenly loud

A rattling noise almost always means debris in a wheel or brush. Flip the robot over, remove the brushes, clean the wheel axles, and check for anything lodged in the impeller area.

8. Battery drains quickly

Normal after 3+ years — replace the battery. Under 2 years, check the app for aggressive settings (max suction all the time) or firmware bugs; roll back or reset if needed.

9. Missing spots or repeating areas

Clean the LiDAR turret (or camera lens), then delete and rebuild the map. Poor lighting can also confuse camera-based navigation — check the app for a low-light warning.

10. Bad smell from the dock or mop

Empty and dry the dirty-water tank weekly. Wash mop pads in hot water. Some docks include a self-cleaning cycle for their internal tubing — run it monthly.

Frequently asked questions

The three most common causes: a clogged filter, a hair-wrapped main brush, or a full bin. Ninety percent of 'weak cleaning' problems are solved by a five-minute maintenance session.

Final verdict

Nearly every 'my robot vacuum is broken' issue is actually a maintenance issue. Ten minutes with the filter, brush, and pads brings most robots back to like-new performance. Save the reset button for when nothing else works.
